Definitely the most important native Friulian wine. Thirty years ago it was considered virtually extinct.

The Pignolo vineyard was planted in 1973 with scions obtained from the last twelve hundred-year-old vines still surviving in Rosazzo and three years later, when the first bunches were picked the reason for its disappearance became evident: the low yield of the vines.

Pignolo is very late harvested and aged over two years in 100% new french oak barrels. It does need years to mellow out its incredible wealth of tannins, but it rewards patience by evolving into a distinctly superior wine. This wine can age 20 years or more.

TASTING NOTES

Appearance: intense ruby red
Nose: very elegant and austere, revealing hints of spice and raspberries against a backdrop of leather and liquorice. Flower and fruit notes emerge after the wine has been allowed to breathe
Palate: broad and balanced. Ripe raspberries and blackberry on entry,
giving way to chocolate and tobacco. Subtle spice and vanilla, with outstanding persistence and breadth on the palate. Massive but silky tannins in the finish
