The Early Years
When the shop was first established in 1924 it was furnished with the latest shop fittings and equipment including refrigeration. It was stocked with products from all over the British Empire.
Wartime
Valletta was heavily bombed during World War II. The bombing campaign, particularly in April 1942, was intense, with Valletta suffering significant damage to buildings, including the Royal Opera House. Debris from the Royal Opera House destroyed the facade.
During the war, the bakery in Pieta was requisitioned by the British Forces where bread was baked 24 hours a day. The bread was then shipped to the Allied Forces in North Africa.
The Wembley Store played an important role during the war distributing rations.
